Athens Private Tour

Athens (Greek: Αθήνα, Athína), is is in many ways the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization. The sprawling city is bounded on three sides by Mt Ymettos, Mt Parnitha and Mt Pendeli; whilst inside Athens are twelve hills [the seven historical ones are: Acropolis, Areopagus, Hill of Philopappus, Observatory Hill (Muses Hill), Pnyx, Lykavittos (Lycabettus), Tourkovounia (Anchesmus)], the Acropolis and Lykavittos being the most prominent. Thesehills provide a refuge from the noise and commotion of the crowded city streets, offering amazing views down to Saronic Gulf, Athens’ boundary with the Aegean Sea on its southern side. The streets of Athens (clearly signposted in Greek and English) now meld imperceptibly into Piraeus, the city’s ancient (and still bustling) port.

Places of interest to travellers can be found within a relatively small area surrounding the city centre at Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos). This epicentre is surrounded by the districts of the Plaka to the south, Monastiraki and Thissio to the west, Kolonaki to the northeast and Omonia to the northwest.

Athens offers some of the best urban walking in Europe. Several major streets have been recently pedestrianized, and a mostly car-free archeological walk which starts at Vasilisis Amalias Street, passes in front of the New Acropolis Museum, Acropolis, Herodion Theatre, Thiseio (Apostolou Pavlou Str), Ermou Street and ends at the popular area of Kerameikos (Gkazi) where numerous bars and clubs are located. Pleasant walking can also be had in Plaka, especially its upper reaches, and in much of Kolonaki, and the National Garden can provide a welcome respite from the heat and noise of the city center.

The sightseeing is possible to be customized on the way, as you wish.Airport layover tour

We had a great experience with Lampros and his walking tour of Athens. He met us at the airport when we arrived on a Sunday AM. It was great to leave the driving and navigating to him and got some background on what we would see. We parked in the old part of Athens and he walked us around to all the sites, pointing out which ones we should re-visit and getting timetables, etc. so we could create an itenerary. He pointed out restaurants and taverna along the way that turned out to be excellent suggestions. We had a good feeling for where we were and what we’d like to see by the time he dropped us off at our hotel at 2PM when our room was ready. It was a great use of what is usually a lost day, trying to learn your way around when you’re exhausted.

We liked Lampros so much, we booked him for a later day to travel up the Athens coast to Temple of Posiden. We got a feel for the geographic context of Athens and experienced everything from a fishing dock (stopping for ouzo and marida) and swanky yachts–even a stop for a swim at a private beach. Thanks Lampros for an excellent experience!

We did the 6-hour city tour of Athens with Lampros. It was a great insight into way of life in Athens and we got to see the major highlights of the city in a short period of time in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle which was a godsend on such a hot day! If you have limited time this is a great way to see the city and the guide is very willing to accommodate you in terms of what you would really like to see and experience. We were picked up at our accommodation and then dropped off at a location we wanted.

Booked this tour through Super Layover. We didn’t know what to expect. Lampros picked us up at our AirBnB. We were exceedingly pleased at his knowledge of Athens, the professionalism, his courtesy and concern to get us to the off-the-beaten-path places. Best tour guide we’ve ever had. He certainly exceeded our expectations. We choose the time. We did the 4-hour tour because we had a 10-month-old with us and only had one day to spend in Athens. Lampros was amazing! I really hope we can see him again on our next visit. He is very knowledgeable, good at explaining, exciting, and friendly.

It was a compact tour for the whole day. We started around 10am and ended with dinner around 8:30pm. We visited Acropolis, the flea market, Plaka & Monastiraki, the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum (I suggest to spend more time there!) and lots of cool places which only the locals know!

Our tour guide Lampros brought us to a really nice restaurant for an authentic Greek lunch. Lampros speaks very good English and knows Athens very well. He made our tour lively and interesting. Best experience ever. There’s some walking on this private tour – wear your most comfy shoes!

We had Lampros pick us up at the Athens airport on our return from Crete and drive us for one night to Delphi (with a stop for lunch in Arachova) and then two nights to Meteora. These sites were the highlights of a 3-week trip that included multiple locations in Crete, Paros and Athens. Lampros was an excellent companion for this triop. He was very helpful and kind, had great ideas of things to do, speaks wonderfully fluent English, has lived and worked abroad with people of different nationalities, and is thoughtful and interesting. We very much enjoyed conversation with him about Greek culture, politics, the effects of the financial crisis, and life today as well as the sites we were visiting. He found good tavernas, took us to interesting little towns not on our itinerary (like Glaxidis) and was an enjoyable companion throughout this three plus day tour. He was accommodating with times and changes in plans. He is a terrific driver with an excellent car. We thought his price for guiding us was very fair.
